Gabrielle Thandiwe Bates (b.2003) is a lens-based artist rooted in storytelling and documentation.

Gabrielle’s work is driven by her passion for Black diaspora art making and storytelling. By creating narrative style photographs with a bit of a fictionalized twist. Her work explores the convergence of beauty, the archive, and nature, offering glimpses into the richness of a Black experience-past, present, and imagined.

She is a recent graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, with a B.F.A in Photography & Imaging with a minor in Africana Studies and Art History.

Her expertise in archive based research has led her to a passion for curatorship and is looking for opportunities to pitch her ideas. She is skilled in selecting objects, researching artists, and designing exhibition layouts.
